Fan Expo 2010 – Pressure valve

As we briefly touched on in our initial Fan Expo write up, the convention was overcrowded this year, with attendance up by about 10,000 people.  It didn’t help that Expo was moved from the larger south building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, to the north, which has approximately 20% LESS square footage. The intention of Hobbystar all along was to keep it in the south building.  After all, Fan Expo moved from the north to the south a few years back precisely because of increasing attendance.  This year, however,…

Fan Expo 2010 – The Big Crunch

With the end of the last weekend of August comes the end of Fan Expo, by far the largest gathering of fans from across the geek spectrum in Canada, and third largest in North America. 2010 also marks the third year that we at RGB Filter have stormed the gates with video cameras and mics in hand to interview artists, writers, game designers and the occasional geek celebrity, meaning that I’m personally looking at about 6 hours of footage to pour through. One of the consistent highlights of Fan Expo…

Zombie Ants – Threat, Myth or Just Another Weird Thing?

At rgbFilter there is standing policy on providing accurate and up-to-the-minute information on one of the major cultural memes of our times; Zombies. Yes, for other news outlets the Zombie thing is like so  ’07 but here at rgbFilter we know that the undead never sleep and vigilance must never tire. Towards this end we present not just the cultural manifestations of the Zombie Menace but probable vectors of infestation from current research in various fields of science. It started innocently enough these things always do. This reporter was scanning…

Toronto Zombie Walk 2010

2010 marks an impressive 8 years that the Toronto Zombie Walk has been up and running (or shambling).   Although there’s still over two months to go until the undead take to the streets of Toronto again, there’s been a change that people should take note of.  This marks the first year that they have instituted a registration process.  It’s free and easy, but with thousands showing up every year, they need to get a head count so the city can allocate the proper resources. Due to the overwhelming number…

Walking Dead trailer from San Diego Comic Con

The makers of The Walking Dead TV series, on AMC, screened the first official trailer at the San Diego Comic Con this year, and at least one person in attendance managed to record it and put it up on YouTube. Though it’s a cam, the trailer holds up and it looks like they’re getting everything right. Also AMC posted some great pictures today from Comic-Con, where the show and cast made a big splash. You can check them out here. Lastly you can catch AMC’s The Walking Dead Motion Comic…

Walking Dead dispatches

AMC and the producers of The Walking Dead are managing to keep fans updated on the series production almost daily. In the latest round, there are a couple of notable interviews on the official blog, including one with producer Gale Anne Hurd of The Terminator and Aliens fame, as well as the director of the second episode, Michelle MacLaren (who also directed, among others, the 3rd season opener for the brilliant Breaking Bad). The really good news is that Robert Kirkman, creator of the comic series, appears to be very…

Walking Dead blog: Robert Kirkman and Greg Nicotero interviews

It’s pretty obvious why AMC is going all out on the official Walking Dead blog.  It’s mainly publicity, and a dash of assauging the fear of some fans that an adaptation of the comic into TV format might water down the gruesome contents.  On the latter, I think there’s little to fear now, as they’ve been pretty open that this isn’t going to be a PG show.  Of course, fans of AMC’s other shows, Mad Men, and the absolutely brilliant Breaking Bad probably guessed this right out of the gate….

The Walking Dead enters production

It’s no secret that The Walking Dead is one of our favourite ongoing comics here at rgb HQ, so when it was announced a TV series based on it was in the pipeline, we couldn’t be happier.  A TV series based on the book could be potentially awesome, if handled properly, and eveything seems to be lining up in that direction.  Although AMC’s list of original series is short, their track record is impeccable, what with Mad Men, and the best show currently on TV, Breaking Bad.  Breaking Bad in…

Very Cool: Class 3 Outbreak Flash Zombie RTS!

Built on their first release, the Zombie Outbreak Simulator, Binary Space has release their first game, the Zombie RTS Class 3 Outbreak. The game is a browser based flash game, running over Google maps, where you control 3 squads of police to try to hold back a zombie invasion. Like many flash games the graphics and gameplay are deceptively simple, but the game is highly addictive, and under the hood Class 3 is surpising sophisticated: Game designer, Jay Weston says, “We set the bar pretty high with our previous release,…

AMC greenlights ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series

Following on from the news in January that AMC had ordered the pilot for a TV series of the best genre comic ever, ‘The Walking Dead’, comes the annoncement that a six episode series has been greenlit by AMC. The project has been on a fast track after AMC won a bidding war last August for the rights to the comic.  AMC must have a lot of confidence in Frank Darabont’s vision for the series after greenlighting a whole season while the pilot is still being cast. Hopefully this vision…
