Splitscreen: A Love Story shot on Nokia N8

Winner of the recent Nokia Shorts 2011 filmmaking competition, Splitscreen: A Love Story is a short film shot entirely with Nokia’s N8 mobile phone (in 720P @ 25fps). The surprisingly watchable footage uses dual frames to represent two ‘days in the life’ — one set in Paris and one in New York — with the shots arranged to show the two lives proceeding in harmony, half a world apart. (They don’t stay apart, though. Watch and see.)

Lytro lets users focus on capturing the moment, not fiddling with auto focus.

The company Lytro uses a new light field sensor that allows digital cameras to record all the light that is moving in all directions in its field of view. The most obvious benefit is that there would be no need to focus before the pictures are shot. Once the image is captured, the user can select the focal point.

Boxee Box gets another update, cements its position as the best HTSTB money can buy.

Much has been said of the Boxee Box, D-link’s fledgling foray into the world of home theatre set-top boxes, running the gamut from “streamlined” and “Polished” (agreed!) to “Disappointing” (…not so much). While it’s true that D-link’s little box has been lacking in some key areas (cough cough MUSIC PLAYER cough), when it comes to ease of use and across-the-board file compatibility, Boxee sits in a class that is simply untouchable by heavy hitters like GoogleTV, Roku, and especially AppleTV. Now, after a scant 6 months, Boxee has widened that…

Canon 60D or Nikon D7000: A Filmmaker’s Decision part 2

Nikon was the first camera company to enable HD video recording on their D90 DSLR in 2008 and thus ushered in the ensuing frenzy that took hold of the video world. For once in the history of video cameras, there was now a sub-$7000 camera that shot 720p 24fps HD video on a sensor that dwarfed even broadcast cameras, but as well allowed people to interchange and use the seemingly endless variety of DSLR lenses! It was the independent filmmaker’s dream come true. Thus the HD-DSLRs were born.

Netflix Canada introduces user-controlled data rates and Paramount Pictures

It’s been a busy week for Netflix, especially when it comes to the Canadian market. When they launched in Canada last fall with its streaming only service, some people were skeptical, as the inital library of titles was a little bit thin, especially without the support of physical media rentals. Since then, the company has continued to add both TV and film titles at a fairly brisk pace. Another concern for many was the restictive caps most Canadian internet users face from their providers.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang

When Markus “Notch” Persson first launched Minecraft, I don’t think he expected to see the indie game grow as popular as it did. Not only has the game well surprassed 1,000,000 copies sold at this point, but it’s getting its own movie. 2 Player Productions, the people behind Reformat the Planet, have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to make Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, and with a month to go have already raised almost a third of the $150,000 budget.
